Planning and interior design of 200 sqm house in Neve Tzedek, Tel-Aviv.
A french couple in their late 60’s asked to renovate an old house in order to accommodate their two daughters with their families – during their visits to Israel.
Thehouse hall is divided into three different areas: a living room, a dining area and a kitchen. All featuring elements in a local arab style; a 4 meters high ceilings, thick walls, columns and beautiful arched openings.
Surrounding the main hall, private accommodation units are located on opposite sides of the house. The owner’s master bedroom and one of the daughters unit on the north wing, and the second daughter’s unit on the south wing.
In order to allow passage to the upper floor in the northern wing, under one of the arches, a beam was removed, and black painted iron coating was installed all around the arch for structural support. This black element had become a design feature, and so other new structural elements were painted in black as well, taking over the white surroundings; The new staircase, the window frames, a beam and pillar which were added over the years, and a black iron “L” profile instead of ordinary floor panels.
The owners enjoy a spacious private unit; a grand bedroom with cherry coloured parquet and a large window facing the back street. Along the wall is a narrow white shelf that could open up partly to a desk. An open wardrobe, all yellow, connects the bedroom with the bathroom, while the toilet are separated by two sliding doors, and can be accessed both from the bathroom and from the outer corridor.
On the other side of the main hall, in the southern wing, steps of smoothed concrete descend into the second private unit for the second daughter’s family. The sleeping area for the kids and a bathroom are located in the lower level, while the parents sleep in a semi open mezzanine. Both areas have large windows overlooking the patio.
