H17 Apartment, Tel Aviv
Photographs: Beller
95sqm Apartment for a young family of three. The project is located in a historic building in the Levontin neighborhood of Tel-Aviv. The flat was purchased whilst the whole building was undergoing a complete renovation and thus the project begins with a bare-bones skeleton of a flat, the exterior envelope only. The main wishes were to create a large open space plan which would allow for gatherings and the maximization of natural light. The irregular shape of the flat dictated a clear hierarchy beginning in the entrance hallway, leading to the public space, and ending in the bedrooms. Through these three main areas the various functions are seamlessly integrated, storage spaces, a laundry area and a working desk which connects to the living area.
In order to emphasize the openness of the plan, the same herringbone flooring is used throughout the central space which includes the kitchen and dining areas. This warm flooring sets the tone for the flat which uses earthy and natural tones as its main palette. The bathrooms are able to create a simple but effective contrast, darker and cooler tones, which emphasize them as separate areas. These contrasts are also used in other contexts to create highlights and interest. A concrete column is left untreated, a brick bathroom wall is exposed to a bedroom, a steel bookcase holds vegetation and wooden elements within. In a way, this is the story of the apartment. On one hand the design is clean, using straight lines to delineate the space. But within this order, many blank canvases are left for the tenants to make this into a personal home.
