95sqm Apartment, London

Glenshaw Mansions is located in West Hampstead near the railway line.
The challenge was to reorganize a dark apartment with cellular spaces and a productive set in the 19th Estate block in West Hampstead. The project narrows the existing long entrance hallway, a typical Mansion Block feature, that separates public spaces to create a large public area with daylight.
The apartment did not have any interesting original architecture features, which left it due for modernization. Three internal structural walls in the farthest area from the entrance have been removed to create an open plan living, dining and kitchen area.
The material palette was chosen to achieve calm calm spaces throughout. The beams and steel pillars, reminiscent of the previous layout, were exposed in the public open space and painted to match the gray of the acoustic tiles in the kitchen.
A sealed, glazed black steel sliding door is used to hide the TV in the entertainment wall when not in use, which balances the space and creates a dialogue with the old-fashioned bronze-clad door at the end of the entrance hall. The built-in carpentry throughout is generously enlarged, powerfully and meticulously detailed.
Two old-fashioned bronze-clad doors close the entrance hallway and make a strong distinction between public and private spaces.
In the master bedroom, the existing wooden frames of the inner wall were exposed to create a sense of separation from the private spaces.
