Old Jaffa Apartment

A 19th century historic two story house in a quiet street off the Jaffa flea market has been restored for a young couple starting a family.
The house encircles an original internal garden to which the windows and second floor balcony overlook and features a sequence of rooms connected to one another.
Each room hints the way to the room following, finally leading to the garden, which brings in the light and obtains a sense of privacy in a hectic city.
The outcome is a unique hybridization of an Arabic traditional house structure with modern interiors.
The owners requested to have a house where they could grow as a family with flexible spaces to fit their future changes in use. The upper floor was designed as a loft that can be divided into closed rooms with bespoke carpentry partitions. The tv room on the lower floor was also planned as a future kids room and the guest room was designed to be later divided into another bedroom and clinic.
Three skylight windows were added in the kitchen area to filter in the mideteranian sun of Jaffa and bring in a unique natural light. In addition, a selection of natural materials have been chosen for the interiors such as locally made terrazzo floors, wooden floors for the upper floor, a local stone for outside paving and steel frames for the windows. All these were designed to compliment the simplicity of the original plan and to blend in with the local urban surroundings.
